ABOUT ANRAKUJI TEMPLE

According to a Zen priest Rankei Doryu, the founder of Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura, Anrakuji Temple was a rather big Zen temple and was the center of learning in Shinshu in the 1200s (the middle of the Kamakura period). It has seen better days and educated many learned priests with the support of the Hojo clan in Kamakura until that clan was overthrown in 1333. In this temple there are stored national treasures and other important cultural objects from the Kamakura period. Anrakuji Temple remains the oldest Zen Temple in Shinshu.
